Black and White Friday ~ Ducks on a log

On a walk around the pond I found this pair of ducks hanging out on a log above the water.  Ducks are found on every continent except Antarctica. In this photo they appear to be taking a time out from swimming and foraging for food. One duck is in the process of preening or grooming itself.  Preening helps ducks get rid of dirt and parasites from their feathers. During the preening, ducks spread a waxy waterproof oil over their outer layer.

You may notice the other duck is standing on one leg which they do to conserve energy. Ducks are also able to sleep standing on one leg and alternate standing on a different leg to avoid strain.

  • Can you stand on one leg for more than 10 seconds?

    • Yes
    • No
    • Not at all
