Another bird to share with my series Birds of the Alphabet.
LOON
The photo above is of a Common Loon sitting on a nest. There are many types of Loons. I never knew the difference in all of these.
Loons are excellent swimmers, using their feet to propel themselves above and under water. However, since their feet are located far back on the body, loons have difficulty walking on land.
Thus, loons avoid coming to land, except when nesting or severely injured.

Oh I did not know that. Have not been around the birds but would love to one day.
their call is quite unique! i love listening to the sounds of the forest to figure out what bird is talking.
I have seen loons and always enjoyed their special calls. You could find the great northern loon in Latvia. You might find this interesting.
