This bias is really about what is happening around and information that seems prominent and credible. There is a news report of increasing amounts of known home invasion crimes. Based on that information a person may believe there is a bigger risk for them personally and drastically change their normal behaviors.
On the other end of the spectrum if you hear that there is virtually no crime in your area this bias can happen as well.
You are only as prepared as the facts you perceive.
