Advice with 1000 Grains of Salt

Our doctor dropped by the house last night to check on the well being of the family. She talked to us about all the advice we were receiving from well meaning people and she said “question everything, take all advice with 1000 grains of salt and don’t make any changes until we talk about it with all the specialists.

When I look at his medical history I get it, one thing leads to another. Seizures, SLE Lupus, hip replacement, pneumonia, internal bleeding, enlarged prostrate, heart disease and all of that probably comes back to the SLE Lupus.

Well meaning people offer all sorts of suggestions. Some of them are excellent ideas, but until we get approval from all of his doctors nothing changes. He takes 22 pills each morning and 24 each night. His medication is outrageous, and still it gives him the opportunity to go for a ride, take pictures of eagles, watch his grandson play baseball and he can yell at his little sister.

Last night someone brought over Comfry lotion for inflamation. Our doctor was here. She gave her speech and then told me I could certainly use it on my knee and it may be an excellent choice for my brother after they take a look at everything.

I look at a bigger picture now when anyone gives me advice and remember there is information they don’t have. Consider the source, compare your values, are they selling you something and is there a trust factor.

It can also been taken with a simple comment like “Thanks for sharing your opinion” and move on. If I find exceptional value I typically let them know.”

Communication is key.
