Some Auckland Landmarks

Here are a few Auckland landmarks, they are something that tell you where you are. A long time ago the scenery was different and as time went by. People built the harbour bridge for transport. The city of Auckland was built and it seems that the Auckland wharves were always there, but once, the scenery looked like something else.

I can’t go back in time, but I can show you what it’s like now.

When you learn to recognise landmarks finding your way is easier by recognising these points.

#1 Auckland Central Business District from Achilles Point

This is the view of central Auckland from Achilles Point. You can see the hypodermic needle which is a casino. It's now a regular landmark for Auckland.

Rangitoto Island looks exactly the same from any place in the Waitamata Harbour you go. The only place you get a different view is from the air.

On the island the whole landscape is a very different view. the Pohutakawa trees seem to grow out of rock. The birds here are protected.

A popular place is a place where you can park your car and sit and watch planes come and go. The miracle of flight contained in several tonnes of metal and hardware with people inside going to an unknown destination.

This is one landmark. You can never replace the waves as huge as a house crashing over these rocks. It should be here for a long time and has been there for who knows?

Im standing on the old Mangere bridge looking at the new Mangere Bridge. The new Mangere Bridge is part of the North Western motorway. The tide is out but the mud flats are wet.

This bridge was built in 1959. It joins St Mary Bay from the Auckland City side to Northcote on the North Shore and further north. I remember toll booths on the north shore. Now no one pays tolls for this bridge and it's all paid for.

The Waitakere Ranges are behind this scene. The north end of the motorway has been here for a very long time. The new extension is south, a tunnel going 1.4 kilometres.
