Interesting Features of the Finnish Passport

Did you know that in Finland, you can get your passport from a convenience store? Imagine going to your local Couche-Tard or 7-Eleven to get your travel documents. I think it would encourage a lot more people to keep their passports up to date. And it seems that it’s a method chosen to help the government cut down on the work involved in processing passport applications, too. I think that’s very innovative. I would love to see it done that way here in Canada too!

Another very cool thing about the Finnish passport: there’s a flipbook design inside! The moose on the bottom right of the page is not identical on each page. Instead, it was drawn as an animation. If you flip through the passport pages quickly, you can see it walking! Perhaps this is a security feature that makes counterfeiting more difficult. Perhaps it’s just fun. Whatever the reason, it’s a very unique addition to what is usually a pretty boring travel document.

I wonder if other countries will start adding animations to their passports too?

  2. I take it you didn’t read the subtitles in Monty Python’s Holy Grail. This is just the first place I go when I hear the word moose, but I can assure you that my sister would never mistreat an animal so

  3. Very interesting post, Blue. Our Irish passport has become a lot less boring, but I’m pretty sure there’n no animation in it – I must check! As to letting you get your passport at a corner chop, there must be security implications. I wonder how the whole verification process is handled 🙂

    • I wondered about that too. But honestly, if the verifications are all done the usual way it’s probably no different than picking up your mail at the postal kiosque in the pharmacy. I don’t imagine it’s a 5-minute process.
