Some New Zealand Bird Facts

I will write a brief description of each and some of these are endangered species of birds. Our New Zealand Native birds are very precious and deserve to be protected.

These don’t include every bird.

I haven’t got a Kiwi as they only come out at night and our hard to find. I have never seen a Kiwi in the wild, rare and hard to find.

Tui

The Kiwi is a type of bell bird. Its a songster, and these birds are quite aggressive. They are common in Auckland, and often they will band together to protect their young.

They are hard to photograph, like to be heard not so much seen, and they move quickly.

They love nectar from flowers.

Biggest pigeon in the world. They are protected and are illegal to eat or kill.

Maoris used to hunt and eat them. Some still do illegally.

The Fantail

This is a curious bird, small, flies like a helicopter. darts around in different directions and eats bugs straight out of the air. They are friendly, and they don't stay still for long.

They are just lovely birds, that often flies and looks at you.

Kokako

Only on Tiritiri Matangi or Ark in the Park or protected places. They live high up in the tree tops. You hear them mostly hardly ever see them.

They are one of the best of the bell birds, melodious singers and hop from tree branch to tree branch.

This was a very lucky shot.
