Yes, we have monsoons in San Diego California. We call these storms The Southwest Monsoon, and The Mexican Monsoon. Below is a late afternoon shot.
They come in July and last until September. They help battle the threat of wild fires here, and also cause some with the lightening strikes that can occur. Our neighbors in Arizona get all the show while some actually make it over to our area. Here is a pre-dawn photo.
During monsoon, thunderstorms are fueled by daytime heating and build up during the late afternoon-early evening and dissipate by late night to repeat the cycle the next day.

Never knew monsoons happened in San Diego. I’ve never lived there so I wouldn’t know.
We do get them, though they are not usually very intense. We even had a tornado last year.
