In the Event of a Nuclear Accident…

Hey, look what I found at the back of the medicine cabinet! Potassium Iodate tablets, for use as a prophylactic against radiation in the event of a nuclear accident. They were sent to every household in Ireland back in 2002, amid fears of a terrorist attack on the UK’s nuclear facilities just across the Irish Sea from us. I wonder how much use they would really be? Did anyone in another country receive such a thing, or even hear about it?

  1. We used to do disaster drills and get under our desks. My dad (a scientist) pointed out that if the strategic targets in Indiana were hit, sitting under our desks 32 miles from one such target was futile.
