What Is It?

It begins in La Poudre Pass, located in the Rocky Mountains and Francisco de Ulloa was the first recorded explorer to find it. It flows through two Mexican states and seven US states. You can imagine all of drama over the water rights of the great river. It’s been known by many names; River of Law, Aha Kwahwat, Ha Tay G’am Sil Gsvgov, Rio del Tizon, Xakxwet, Hakhwata, and and Rio Colorado to name a few.

This great river over a period of an estimated 6 million years carved it’s way from the source of the Rocky Mountains all the way down through the Grand Canyon and eventually into the Sea of Cortez.

Man did not leave the river alone. There are a series of dams and other diversions so the water could be directed and used for other purposes. White water rafting is still one of the most used as a recreational sport along the river. You will find that rafting in several areas Fisher Towers, Cataract Canyon, Westwater Canyon, and the Grand Canyon.

If you ever get the opportunity to take a trip down this river, get a waterproof camera and make memories for a lifetime.
