For over 3,000 years women have played many roles in the military. Although this is commonly known as a male profession, many women choose it. Besides participating in wars as nurses, a very small number of women in history have fought alongside men. Military women deserve to be honored for their braveness. In the American Civil War, there were a few women who cross-dressed as men in order to fight. More recently, from the beginning of the 1970s, most Western armies have begun to admit women to serve active duty in all of military branches. During World War 1, many women participated as nurses. Its is not a taboo for women to join the army.
