Buying Nothing New

<a href="https://dohanews.co/qatars-first-shopping-festival-kick-off-jan-7/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Source</a>

I recently read a very inspiring article by a young woman who had to clear out her dad’s apartment after his death due to cancer.

Going through her dad’s things and then having to decide what to sell, donate , re cycle or throw made her realise how much stuff we accumulate in our life.

So she decided to embark on an experiment. With exception of grocery items and medicines, she bought nothing new for 200 days.

Here are some of the things she learned through this experience:

There is already too much stuff in the world.

People buy things out of pure compulsion.

There is an unreasonable stigma against pre-owned items.

We don’t really need most of that stuff we buy.

Most things we buy are really just “nice-to-haves;” real needs are generally more limited.

It was a great article and I think we can all learn from her journey.

  1. It’s true, we don’t need a lot to live, but people are vain creatures. I think if we had the time we could do a lot with what’s thrown away and reuse all sorts of things.
Old clothing can be reused but there is a time where the material is so thin and with so many holes, it needs a new use. Maybe stuffing in a cushion or else used as a tie in the garden for certain plants that needs help to stay upright, like climbing beans.
