Movie Review: SERENITY, 2019

I will begin with the main thing: this film will turn out to be completely not what you will expect from it after watching the trailer. It all started well: the trailer was promising, beautiful pictures, big names in the cast, and I had the full conviction that it is a thriller: about revenge, jealousy, all-consuming love, and passion. I’ve never been so wrong.

No – magnificent views of Mauritius, intrigue, drama on the spot, as well as excellent acting work (with Matthew McConaughey, Lane Clark could not be otherwise). However, almost everything that we imagined during the preview at the premiere, literally from the middle of the story stumbled over a rather strange script.

It was then that we began to see clearly that the merry and amusing ending in the style of “He’s a villain, she is good,” or “They are both villains, but the girl is holy,” or “She’s a bitch and did everything”, and the like – will not be here.

And still, such ending would be great as the victory of evil in one form or another is always fertile ground for a good movie, leaving an indelible mark on the soul and memory of any movie lover.

But everything turned not as we expected.

Dill is a fisherman who earns his living by catching fish and organizing fishing on a boat for clients. Gradually, the main character becomes obsessed with catching a certain fish, which even gives a name. And these attempts could continue for a long time if a woman from the past had not suddenly appeared in his life.

The first half of the movie – a dull outrage. The protagonist wanders in different locations and the next day repeats about the same, but with a different sequence. And when it already seems that the picture flies into a deep hole, the authors introduce new characters and gradually reveal fresh plot details.

The film does not give what you expect from this kind of work. But I would not say that in this case, it is bad. The ending literally pulled the movie into the category of mystery.

Not to spoil, I will stop here.

<a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-snax-placeholder="Source" class="snax-figure-source" href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6476140/mediaviewer/rm672230400" target="_blank">https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6476140/mediaviewer/rm672230400</a>

However, we must pay tribute to Stephen Knight – he built his bizarre, sometimes psychedelic story so well and skillfully that no one dared to leave the session without watching to end. Everyone sat up to the titers, delved into what the unshaven and, it seems, unwashed character McConaughey said, and waited for the final turning surprise.

We can say, we got it. His solo one of the best actors of our time performed as if it was his last role in life. But still, with all (in a good way) dissimilarity to the majority of thrillers currently being shot, this is by no means the best movie personally in his brilliant career.

So, have fun watching if you dare to do it.
