Bread and salt, for centuries, protect guests

Mundial hosts in Russia have made efforts to welcome European champions in the traditional way, which included national customs, which are frequent in hospitality in Slovenian countries, among others in Serbia. A girl dressed in folk costume picked it in front of Portugal’s bread and salt. This custom originated in the tenth century as part of the church ritual, in order to become a mass popular tradition during the 19th century, which was applied on family and crafts celebrations.

Bread and salt in ancient times, in Latin, Helen, Indus, and then at the time of Byzantium and in particular the appearance of Christianity, had a mythic meaning in all nations, because it depended on human life. The bread and the Serbs always had a cult meaning. Wheat, bread, and cake were the bloodless sacrifice of the demon, which was given to the ancestor under the threshold or to the unknown guest, in order to protect themselves from dishonest powers.

When you are welcoming the guest with bread and salt, it is a message that he is welcome and that nothing bad will happen to him in your house. It was considered that every, even the poorest house, always has bread, salt and water – that it has something to welcome the guest, was known or unknown. Therefore, until today the custom has served the guest using the first salt and bread, and only after the other “what God has given, and the host has prepared.”

The bread usually does not cut, but it breaks, because the knife symbolizes the quarrel in the house.
