DIY Dentistry: How To Prevent Tooth Tartar, and Remove It At Home

Do you have an unsightly build-up of tartar on your teeth? If you do, you will know about it: it is a nasty yellowish-brown mineral deposit, which is usually found on the back of the teeth. It is a fairly common problem which is usually caused by a bad diet and ineffective brushing. It is not just unsightly, but also potentially serious: if it is left untreated, it can cause periodontitis, an infection and inflammation of the ligament and alveolar bone supporting the teeth. This can usually be prevented by not letting tartar build up on them.

Most people visit their dentists for tartar removal, but you can in fact treat it yourself at home.  It is important to take into account, however, that home treatments only achieve partial results, compared to those you will get from a dentist.

There are a few ways to treat tartar at home. You just need: baking soda, water, hydrogen peroxide (can be bought either online, or at many supermarkets and hardware stores) salt, a dental pick, a toothbrush, and a natural antiseptic mouthwash.

Simple Methods to Remove Tartar

  1. Mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide with half of a cup of warm water.  Rinse your mouth for one minute, spit it out, then rinse again for half a minute with half a cup of cool water.
  2. Rinse your mouth with natural antiseptic mouthwash every other day.
  3. In a cup, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with half of a teaspoon of salt, rinse your toothbrush with warm water, and dip this in the solution.  Brush your teeth and spit. This should take about 5 minutes.
  4. You can also use a dental pick to remove the tartar, but take care not to scrape your gums.

To prevent tartar build-up, and keep teeth clean and healthy, try these top inside tips:

*Use Strawberries and Tomatoes*

Strawberries and tomatoes are both high in vitamin C, and they help to soften tartar and keep your teeth white.  Rub them on your teeth and leave for five minutes.  This method also works with other foods rich in Vitamin C.

 *Use Dental Floss*

When you floss your teeth  twice a day after brushing, it will help to prevent tartar building up.  Practice this technique, and it should only take around 30 seconds to do.

*Eat Spicy Food*

Eating spicy foods, such as chilli, activates your salivary glands, producing more saliva, which helps to naturally clean your teeth and mouth.

So use these home methods for tartar prevention and removal, to reduce the number of trips you make to the dentist each year, which I am sure we all agree, can only be a good thing!
