Galaxy Express 1 (2016-12-03 11-08-55d)

The photo was taken at the Morton Grove Metra station in Morton Grove, Illinois. This station is on Metra’s Milwaukee District/North Line which connects Chicago’s Loop with the suburban areas to the northwest of the city. The train is heading outbound. The sky in the original photo was so washed out I almost deleted it but decided instead to keep it and see if I could figure out anything to do with it.

I have wanted to try my hand at composite photos for some time and figured this would be as good a chance as any. I looked on NASA’s Web site to find a photo that i could use to replace the sky. I settled on a photo of Galaxy NGC 1291 taken from the Spitzer Space Telescope. (All of NASA’s photos are in the public domain.)

Following the instructions in a tutorial video, I used Affinity Photo 1.5 to adjust the white balance, brightness, contrast and saturation. (I actually should have done this after combining the images. I’ll know better next time.)
