Garfield Park Fieldhouse: Gold Dome Building – 365 Photos Challenge 38-51

I always feel as though history on Chicago’s West side is so underrated compared to other historic sites throughout Chicago. It is almost like you would have to have lived here in order to know about these hidden treasures, or either have known someone that has visited and shared pictures of these sites. One of the things I vowed while getting settled in on Chicago’s West side was to share these hidden treasures, so that they do not go unnoticed by those interested in the city. I get the pleasure of seeing the Gold Dome Building while cycling on my bike around East Garfield park neighborhood in Chicago. I love its area because I can conduct time trial loops with no worries of stopping at traffic lights or being hit by a car.

As for the building, it was constructed in 1928 as the West Park Commission administrative headquarters; designed by architects Michaelsen & Rognstad. The buildings Spanish Revival style was inspired by a 1915 exposition in San Diego’s Balboa Park, which influenced design throughout the nation. The field house’s ornate facade includes a sculptural figure of Robert Cavalier de LaSalle, explorer of the Upper Midwest. The interior rotunda also has impressive details, including marble panels by the renowned sculptor, Richard W. Brock.

After the 1934 consolidation of the independent park commissions into the Chicago Park District, it became Garfield Park’s Field house. In response to increased recreational needs, a gymnasium and outdoor swimming pool constructed on the west side of the building in 1983.

    • This is something that many do not see because they tend to visit it when it’s closed. I will be doing a follow up on this in the summer with more pictures of the inside.
