This is Desert Road, Waioru, taken 2 years ago. The elite army SAS are trained in this stark and challenging area.
I can see for miles and miles in the Desert Road. Now I have not been here in winter, but in winter, often this road is closed because of snow. It gets icy cold.
It looks beautiful to me! Great capture!
Thanks Ellie , glad you like it.
A wonderful shot of the road. The landscape really looks abandoned
Thanks Vidocka, yes, it is a desert road, in the middle of winter it snows and many motorists are trapped until help arrives.
I had no idea about how cruel and challenging it was, but could imagine what would happen if I was released in the area!
Well, for that it is the worst NZ can do, but there are no snakes or wild animals that will harm you, except maybe the 2 legged kind and you won’t meet many of those because they don’t like the conditions.
I do not understand yet the worst of the area. Is the air hot and the soil is arid, for example?
No just very cold even in summer time but there are some plants that still grow. I don’t know the soil type.
It is a place where its a very long way to anything civilized like conveniences etc.
There are other places that are more uncivilised in NZ.
So, the main problem is that very long road and not the area around it?
Well, I don’t know the terrain very well. Hard conditions for those who train in NZ SAS and they have to be very tough and fit.
To be honest, only having driven through I would not know much. Its not called Desert road for nothing
I can understand what you mean, Pamela. Thank you for your explanation.
What a great picture of the road to nowhere! As Kim said, that could be in California, Maryland or any other US state that has mountains.
Awesome Pam!
Thanks Doc, it is also a volcanic area, close to Tongario National park, I hope to see more of that one day. I have not really seen the USA except a short day trip to Disneyland. Maybe one day I will.
Ditto for me, I’ve never actually been to New Zealand. I’ve wanted to, but have never had a chance to go.
It looks like it could be here. I love wide open spaces where you can see for miles. Great shot here. I would love to take a drive there.
Thanks Kim, I would love to go back there and look again. It is a very interesting place.
Kim, I haven’t really seen the USA at all, maybe one day I will gain that opportunity.
Yes, the perfect time for us to visit places like that are in the spring and fall. Id wait until we change presidents before visiting, which will be soon.
You can always visit San Diego through my hikes until then.
Thanks Kim, it would be a great place to visit if my circumstances change I will visit.
Looks like a beautiful landscape in the picture … you say it’s a very cruel landscape for life
Well I don’t know much about it, but it is isolated and can get very cold in winter
those SAS chaps are tough as nails
Thanks Alex, they certainly are. It is hard to get into the SAS and a gruelling life. Waioru is a tough area to live in,
The ancient Greeks believed that tough lands bred tough people
