Auckland’s Beaches

I just saw Fortunes post about lovely beaches in the world and realised how fortunate we are in Auckland, not to mention the rest of New Zealand.

So I show case a few, but really can’t count the number of beaches in Auckland. Certainly a great place to go this summer, which is a hot one.

Auckland people are surrounded by a wide area of beaches, it’s minutes from east to west coast. Auckland sits on an Isthmus where the sea surrounds us on 3 sides.

  1. When you describe many of those beaches as dangerous, Pamela, I take it you’re referring to currents and so on, rather than sharks or the like? And do you know what gives the colour to the black sand?

    • Yes, I am describing currents and rips. We don’t get many Sharks on the West Coast, they usually go on the East Coast. Some East Coast beaches of Dunedin sometimes gets visited by Sharks – however as a child had an interesting experience with Sharks at Ruakaka, in Northland north of Auckland near Marsden Point Oil refinery. No the Sharks attacked no one.

      • Sorry, I will point out there are a few East Coast beaches here, in these particular beaches, the sharks come but not often. Maybe Orewa beach or a beach close to that was visited by a great White Shark. I have another story with that.
