Ona warm spring morning in 1928, as a young Australian farmer named Jack Trott bent down to examine an odd rack in the ground, he noticed a sweet smell. After carefully scraping away a thin layer of soil, h saw to his absolute amazement, a tiny flower, a mere half-inch across, growing underground.
What Trott had found was, in fact, a new species of orchid: Rhizanthella gardneri-an extraordinary plant that spends its entire life in total darkness. The name Rhizanthella is derived from two Greek words: Rhiza, meaning root and Anthos, meaning flower.
