The 2019 Charleston Classic quarterfinals will begin today at the TD Arena in Charleston, SC. This college basketball tournament has become one of the premiere Thanksgiving tournaments since its inception in 2008. This tournament has also become known for quality upsets by mid-major teams that look to upgrade their profile before conference play begins. Yes, I do love these early basketball tournaments around Thanksgiving. The Christmas tournaments are fun as well.
They are fun, to a degree. I worry that they are designed at times to make money for the university.
Actually, the venue pays the NCAA to hold tournaments. The tournaments boost tourism for the venues that decide to facilitate them.
The universities also get a significant fee for participating in these events.
