Writers need to know what words will work best in the project they are working on. Those are the good words for them. But good words come in all sizes and shapes. A positive word to a depressed person will encourage them. A supportive word to a child struggling in school can inspire them. A consoling word to the bereaved can comfort them. All good words, no doubt.
Here, the good words have to do with character. There are people who like to be feared but that’s not actually satisfying. Being thought well of because of high character qualities, though, is something the best people find satisfying. So let’s talk about those qualities. They are useful for writers who are developing characters, but they are more useful for living life well.
Take the quiz to see how many of the definitions you can match to the words. Let us know in the comments below whether you learned a new way to say something you already know.

Seven out of nine on this quiz.
Thanks for stopping in to check it out. It’s designed to get us thinking about the layers of word definitions so you did really well.
I got a perfect score. A few questions had me shaking my head, though. The synonyms didn’t quite fit…
I’m with the sailor, Roberta. I got a full score, but #1 particularly had me dubious. Conscientious means acting in accordance with one’s conscience, while efficient means gaining maximum productivity with minimum waste. Very separate concepts. Similarly with #5: Impeccable and ethical are discrete concepts which may or may not overlap. It would be wrong to pretend that they are in any way synonymous.
I don’t want to hop on the dissenting bandwagon, but what Norman said…
Perhaps I did not do a good enough job in the opening explanation of the quiz’s theme, but studying out the words could help.
I’d suggest reviewing Norman’s comment.
Especially when keeping the context of the quiz’s theme in mind, a word study bears the correct answers out. For instance, definitions of both efficient and conscientious consistently refer to reliability. Impeccability has to do with the highest of standards, as does having exemplary ethics. Creating a list of synonyms was not the goal of this post, but an assumption about that is understandable.
