Lots of news these days about changes being made in WhatsApp rendering some phone incapable of accessing this software.
With more features being introduced some phones do not have the capability to use this App. I am allergic to Apps – do not take me literally – and so I do not have WhatsApp.
Upgrading and updating software are two different issues. While some may just have to update many need to upgrade.

Does upgrade mean going for new phones?

I’ve heard of WhatsApp, dear Grace …. but I don’t know what it’s used for
There are many free features and many go for it.
Thanks for the kind explanation
I use it sometimes, but I don’t have any idea about the changes.
There are changes and if you search you will get to know about them.
I think those who have Android 6 upwards can enjoy the new look of WhatsApp. I don’t know about Android 5 but 4 (kit-kat) ran out of fashion. With iPhone, I don’t know.
It could involve spending if one has to upgrade Am I right?
Yes. In my case I only update. It’s better to buy a new phone since now they’re cheaper.
