We made kukuls – a memory

Kulkuls is a sweet item made only during Christmas time. They are supposed to resemble worms for whatever reason. We were just married that year – just two months away from Christmas.  Equipped with a lot of enthusiasm but zero knowledge  when it came to cooking I ventured into preparing Christmas sweets. We both got together and went about making kulkuls.  Kulkuls need coconut juice.  We prepared the dough and went for evening mass – it was a Sunday.  After returning we had dinner quickly and set about making kulkuls. Little did I realise that the coconut juice helps the dought to ferment and we are not supposed to keep the dough but fry the kulkuls immediately  The kulkuls swelled in the oil and the size became four to five times in the oil. Obviously I was disappointed and told my husband that we will not serve them but just eat them ourselves. When the first lot of visitors arrived the first thing my husband asked me in their presence to serve them the kulkuls!!!  A big tease no doubt but I refused and then the whole story had to be repeated to the visitors.
