Kigelia Africana or sausage tree is a common tree in Africa. I have seen the fruits of this tree hanging down from the branches at the end of long and thick wiry stems. However I have never seen the flower closely before today. These huge flowers are thick and waxy. The beautiful crimson color of the flowers adds to their attractiveness. Sadly the flowers are high up in the trees hidden by thick foliage and not so easily visible unless one goes looking for them.
I was happy that one that had fallen on a garden fence caught my eye today. The fruits of this tree are brown in color shaped like a sausage, about 2 feet in length and is said to weight up to 7 Kgs. The fresh fruit is said to be poisonous and purgative. In Botswana people dry the fruit to make it ready for consumption it is eaten after roasting. The dried fruit is also fermented to make alcoholic beverages.
I am surprised that some of these threes are planted on our roadsides , these heavy fruits falling from such heights could humans walking under them and even dent lighter vehicles.

honestly, i have no idea if when visiting Africa I saw this. It is amazing – you have an eye for flowers!
Although I do love flowers and trees, this one has escaped me for years. It was only because I saw the flower on the fence I stopped to look at the tree and learn more about it later.
I suspect things like that are often the case for all of us. I find interesting technology things from time to time that I was unaware of before.
Yeah we re not all eyes and ears I guess. We are limited in our own way , which could be good for us at times.

You have a completely different climate and grow tropical plants that would not survive here …. very beautiful flower
