The Friday in Black and White – Children dancing Căluşul

Căluşul is one of the most original Romanian traditions. The dance is executed by groups of boys or men. The dance is rhythmic with the technique and the steps well chosen. Also, the costume has to meet certain clearly defined requirements that each have its meaning. Dancers wear white trousers and white tunics, with brightly coloured ribbons streaming from their hats. Bells are attached to their ankles, and dances include the use of sticks held upright whilst dancing, or pointing at the ground as a prop.
