One of the sports I truly enjoy is rodeo. My extended family participates in the sport and we ran rodeo stock for some time. It occurred to me that many people here may not know much about the sport.
There are rules that are quite detailed in every event. One of events that I find quite exciting is the Saddle Bronc Riding. The equipment used, primarily the saddle has to meet very specific requirements and they are checked.
The rider is saddled in the in the shoot. On the first jump out of the shoot the rider’s spurs must break over the horses shoulder. The riding rein and hand must be on the same side of the horse. Then it’s all about the 8 second ride. There are two judges. There is a score for the horse and a score for the rider. If the horse does not perform well enough the rider will be offered a re-ride.
The competitors are vying for at least a portion of the “pot”. With that being said, if there are no qualifying rides, the stock (horses) are considered the winners and the money goes to the provider of the stock. There is great incentive for those running rodeo stock to take great care of the animals.
