Penn Central Engine Shop (18th & Canal), Chicago, Illinois
Pentax Spotmatic Vivitar 28/2.5, Kodak Ektachrome-X 1/125 @ f:13.9
Scanned using a Wolverine F2D Mighty scanner.
It was built by Alco in 1924 and, sadly, scrapped in the 1980s. In the 1960s it was used for excursions and, in 1967 and 68, pulled the Schlitz Circus Train of Circus World’s Baraboo Circus World Museum.
Editing was done with On1 Photo RAW 2020. In Tone I increased the contrast, shadows, whites and structure and lowered the highlights, midtones and blacks. In Color I raised the vibrance. I set Details to High.
Next I selected the ‘HDR’ preset from ‘Starting Points’ and made a couple of changes. I changed Color Enhancer from Auto to Sky. I also added Photo Filter (Polarizer) and the Color Adjustment filter to get rid of some yellow in the snow (reduced saturation all the way and increased brightness o bit).

Do you think that there is something about steam locomotives that modern locomotives just can’t duplicate?

I haven’t seen one in ages. Maybe I will find them in a museum I guess.
There are quite a few railway museums around.
A great edit work, Gary.
We have a few locomotive engines operating here in India as heritage attractions.
There are some like that in the USA also. We just had one come to my area ab little over a month ago but I wasn’t able to go see it.
I love these old steam engines, gorgeous editing.
Thanks, Carol. I wish there were more of them around.
Old steam engines really look beautiful, like the museum’s exhibit.
I like the look of them. Unfortunately this one was scrapped. That’s a shame.
Great photo, I love seeing these old steam engines,
Me too. Sadly, unless you go to a railway museum, you don’t see too many of them anymore. Many of them, including this one, were scrapped.
