Europa League Round of 16 ~ 8/5/20

The Europa League is restarting with the Round of 16 being played on Wednesday and Thursday.  Here is the schedule for the four matches on Wednesday.

Istanbul Basaksehir at FC Copenhagen – 12:55 PM EST.

VfL Wolfsburg at Shakhtar Donetsk – 12:55 PM EST (UniMas).

Getafe at Inter Milan – 3 PM EST.

LASK at Manchester United – 3 PM EST (UniMas).

Due to the postponement of matches, Getafe and Inter were not able to play the first leg in the Round of 16.  Whichever team wins this match advances to the Europa League quarterfinals.  The first legs were played in the other three scheduled games.  The team with the higher aggregate score from both legs will advance to the quarterfinals.

Istanbul Basaksehir won the first leg 1-0 at home against Copenhagen.  Basaksehir will not have to deal with the cold weather in Denmark, so Copenhagen will not have as much of a home advantage.

Donetsk won the first leg 2-1 on the road against Wolfsburg.  Those two away goals will be critical if the aggregate score ends in a draw because away goals are the first tiebreaker in that scenario.  Wolfsburg will have to win by two goals in order to advance.

Both Getafe and Inter have outstanding defenses.  Whichever team can hold up in the back four will win the match.  Manchester United won the first leg 5-0 over LASK in Austria.  LASK will have to win by six goals in order to advance.

  1. A couple of changes – all four matches can be seen online on CBS All Access. Also, the Inter Milan/Getafe match will be played at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, the home arena for Schalke.

    • Wolfsburg has to go to Ukraine though, but I think that you meant that the home teams would win the early games. The pressure will be on Basaksehir to win because that is the same club that Turkey President Erdogan played for. The Inter game will not be on TV in the USA, but the Shakhtar/Wolfsburg match on TV will make up for that. I want to see how many goals Manchester United will score.
