Body positive: 3 tips to improve your self-esteem

Learning to like our body as it is may not be an easy task.

1. Set aside the comparison – The human being has the eternal need to belong and to identify in some way with the other. The problem arises when this desire is dominated by belonging to a group that depends a lot on the image. Avoiding comparison is the first step in accepting your body and feeling good. If we notice, the negative opinions we have about our body are always based on some comparison, either because I am not as thin or as wide as I should be, or because my breast is not the right size…

2. Relativize the value of your image and strengthen your self-esteem – Sometimes, we think that, to really like us, we only need to lose a few pounds or have another image different from the one we are used to seeing in the mirror. When our identity is very dependent on our image, it is because it is poorly supported. In order to survive the demands of today’s society, it is necessary to realize that identity is not limited to the image, but that it is something that represents our global characteristics, that is, the physical, psychological, social and cultural part. Our image has only the importance that we give it, being quite limiting to reduce our self-esteem to a single area of our identity.

3. Be in peace with your body – Having a positive attitude towards the body starts right away when we are children. It is necessary to celebrate normality and stop following the ideal of unattainable perfection. It is through the trivialization of what is not perfect that we soften the comparison and stop feeling so insufficient, to start to have more feelings of acceptance and adequacy in ourselves and in others.
