Wherever you go in the Philippines, you will surely find this delicious exotic food known as balut.
What is a balut?
Some people describe balut as a duck embryo. Which by that definition, some people would find the food disgusting without even tasting it.
To put the definition lightly end more accurate, balut is a duck egg incubated for 16-18 days. Sometimes 19 or 20 days (which I will not recommend for new eaters).
The balut that I’m holding is of 18 days.
Ok, I stopped myself from making a full description of what you see here. The description might not be appealing to some people.
Anyways, the egg is boiled and best eaten while it’s hot. Some prefer to sprinkle it with a pinch of salt. Some want it with spicy vinegar.

I would never try it, it looks weird, I do not know how people eat it without starting vomiting.
It tastes good actually. But some people don’t like the looks of it. Some people close their eyes before eating it. 😀
i would be open to trying, but would not be able to look at it while i was eating!
I know a few people who would actually eat balut like that. They close or even cover their eyes while eating the balut. They don’t want to see the duckling (or embryo) while eating it but they like the taste.
i would have to close my eyes! I find if I don’t see some things I can eat them.
I also hold my nose when cutting Durian!
Aha! You are familiar with that pungent-smelling but sweet fruit… hehehe. The truth is, I still have to taste the fresh fruit. I have only tasted the processed ones or the candies…
I have to dare my self to eat that fruit when available. But they grow only in Mindanao, especially in Davao. Which is quite far from my place.
i had it fresh in Thailand, we cut into it in the kitchen. The kitchen smelled bad the rest of the day!
the fruit is amazing, fresh it is so much better.
Hehehe. You should have cut it in an open area. They say once you will get used to smell after some time and come to like it. 😀
it was something we were trying for the first time, every time after that we cut it open on the porch!
