When cruising bans were announced, several of the cruise ships were on cruise voyages, laden with passengers. Some ships, such as Ruby Princess, Artania, and Diamond Princess had been hit with COVID-19 outbreaks; most of them, however, remained free of the virus.
With cruise bans firmly in place, and lines going into operations pauses, the cruise ships of the world ground to a halt – passengers disembarked at ports all around the world throughout March and early April. Once passengers had disembarked, these stricken cruise lines had to find space to berth the world’s massive fleet of pleasure cruise ships.
And so, they went into a state called“warm layup” – where, these “empty” ships remain fully functional with engines still running without shore power. We take a look at where all these empty cruise ships are and find out how cruise lines are parking their fleet of ships during the 2020 COVID-19 Shut Down.

Thank you for sharing. That was very interesting. I know European cities like where I lived in Riga greatly depended on full cruise ships stopping at the port in the summertime for local businesses.
My wife suggests they turn these, +- 200 moored “ghost ships” into super low-cost housing. (lol)
The economic impact of this virus is going to take years to recover from.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the case. A very strange thing happened here in South-Africa, since the COVID19 outbreak, in January, (mid-winter) no one has died of flu !?! 🙁
we have a similar US issue. hopefully things stabilize, and we are able to move past this.
