Precontemplation

I believe some people from the south have another word for this term. It’s “fixin”. It means that you have not really gotten around to doing anything about it and really are not even interested in talking about it. It’s the stage of fleeting thoughts and still it’s an important step in the progression.

Contemplation

In this station you are searching for a true personal reason to make the change. Changing for others is rarely successful. You need a personal motive belief to move forward with change.

Determination

You are mustering the strength to complete the change. You are preparing. You are ready to set yourself up success. You are speaking with others about the idea and building confidence.

Action

This simply means you createda plan and you are working the plan. YOu are beginning to change and moving toward success.

Maintenance

This is where you make progress, tweek the plan and needed and just keep going.

  1. I am from the south and when we say fixin to do something, its means I am about to do that but you mentioned it before I got to it.

    What behavior do these steps change?

    • The people from the south that I know say fixin’ with an n means it’s never going to happen, fixing with a g means now it will get done. So I guess the “we” you know are different than the people I know, that is why I carefully wrote ” some people”. Did you miss that part?

      You can use these steps to change any behavior you would like. My neighbor used it to stop smoking. My grandson used it to start saving for college.
