Sailboat on Lake Michigan – Testing Luminar 2018

I was one of the beta testers for Luminar for Windows, a program which has been available for the Mac platform for a while but has recently been released for Windows. The finished version was released this week (15 Nov 2017) and I’ve been playing with it. (Finished may not be the right word since, although it only came out on Wednesday, there was a bug fix released on Friday. I’m not knocking the company. I’d rather problems get fixed sooner rather than later.)

The concept of the program is interesting. Essentially it is a collection of filters which can be applied to your image. A particular combination of filters can be saved as a preset which can then be applied to another image and adjusted as needed. The program comes with a nice collection of presets but you can create your own and users can share them with each other.

There is much more to the program than just filters and presets but they form the basis. The system works very nicely. The ability to manage your images will be coming soon and will be a free update when it is done.

I’ve included an image I edited – this one from the JPG but it also handles RAW files – plus the original unedited version so you can see what it can do for your photos. The processing took me about 15 minutes.

The photo is of a sailboat in Lake Michigan by Montrose Point in Lincoln Park in Chicago, Illinois. In the background you can see the Near North side of Chicago. The photo was taken on 22 May 2013 using a Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera with a Hoya linear polarizer.

I applied the following filters: Accent - AI Enhancer (a very interesting filter), Dehaze, Microstructure, Color Contrast (amount & hue), Adjustable Gradient, (Color Temperature (tint only, not temperature), Details Enhancer and Polarizing. I also sharpened the image a bit and boosted the contrast.

    • Thanks, Carol. The program still needs some more capabilities before I can rely on it alone, but I am very impressed with what it does. It’s also pretty cheap compared to similar products.
