Dortmund, Germany

The city of Dortmund is located in North Rhine-Westphalia in Western Germany. It was extensively destroyed by bombs during Word War II. It was rebuilt and is now an important hub for innovation. Most of the old buildings were destroyed and most of what you see is built after 1945. The city is famous for its soccer (football) team Borussia Dortmund.

I took this photo of the old market called St. Reinolds, during a short layover on my way to another city.

  1. Very nice. That building in the centre looks quite a bit older than 1940s. When I was in Warsaw recently I was surprised at how many of the buildings seemed to have survived the war. But when I asked about it, I was told that very, very few buildings survived, but that most were replaced with near-identical ones in order to preserve the character of the city. I was amazed. I wonder is that also the case here.

    • I’m not sure about that specific building but I know that similar to Warsaw, many buildings in Frankfurt were re-built to look identical to the old ones.
