Lake Kerkini #2

I want to tell about the inhabitants of Lake Kerkini.

In a previous post on the lake I hinted what birds could meet in it.

Here is one of these species – Gray Heron.

These birds are so accustomed to people that they do not even pay attention to passing boats!

Next to the quay of the village Kerkini there is one gray heron which poses to everyone 🙂

Cormorants are more cowardly.

This time we were harder to get closer to them.

The pink flamingo is something like a lake emblem.

We managed to see a fairly large colony, divided into at least 3 flocks in the shallows.

If you approach quietly behind bushes you can hear talking. For me, the sounds they are releasing are funny 🙂

There were also many young birds, which can only delight me!

Young are more gray plumage.

    • September and October are appropriate months. It is good to go in the morning until 8:00 to 9:00 or 17:00 because then they eat and turn so much attention to the boats.
At the eastern end of the lake, near the village of Limnichori there is a dike and can also be observed. There you have to be quiet.

        • According to what I read in the Collins Bird Guide, a flamingo of this species occurs except in northern Greece and southern France and southern Spain.
It is good if you do not know the place to go with a tour guide.

          • Sometimes they stop in Bulgaria, but I think it’s usually in spring. When I went to Poda this summer, they were already gone.
Do you think that it’s possible to take decent photos with a non-professional camera in Kerkini, or are the birds too far away?
