A Walk through Muriwai Gannet Colony

Muriwai is a West coast Auckland Surf beach and is as dangerous as Piha Beach.

One thing that attracts tourist is the local Gannets and scenery.

Plenty of Oriental tourists this day, and as a child we had these places to ourselves. So I will show you what is like as if you were enjoying the view all for you.

The Thumbnail is an island off the beach and I would not be surprised if it was the original Gannet colony. Probably has seals and penguins on it.

#1 Looking at an island from the car park in Maori Bay

There is a very steep bank over the top of the flax and a walk to the beach below. I don't go there today.

#2 Muriwai Gannet colony

The rock on the left is an island of Gannets.

is the rock separate of the rest of the mountain/hill or attached can’t tell from the picture

#3 Path looking on to Muriwai beach

I wanted to show the path but tourists kept travelling down this path.

#4 Muriwai Beach

Muriwai beach goes all the way to Kaipara South Head. The Kaipara harbour is one very large harbour further north than the Manukau harbour.

A bit of time by itself.

#6 Gannet flight

I think these are very brave birds and they fly 500 miles a day with ease.

#7 Lookout post

Right by the gannets there is another lookout as well.

#8 Gannet over the sea

These waves are huge, as big as a house.

#9 Fishermen on the rocks

These men can easily be swept away by a freak wave.

#10 Gannet flight

Fish spotting reconnaissance flight.
