I always wanted to go to Cape Kidnappers, so I took the opportunity when I stayed with my Aunt Cara in Hawkes Bay. I took a Cape Kidnappers Gannet Safari bus, with Aunt Cara, my husband Warwick and traveled in a 10 seater bus with other tourist.
It’s a 3 hour trip and you get morning tea with biscuits when you get to the Gannet Colony. You can walk to the Gannet Colony and it’s 10 kilometres from Cliffton to Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony.
It called Cape Kidnappers because some Maoris pulled up by Captain Cook’s ship and offered them some more fish, then nabbed a Tahitian boy from his ship. Captain Cook and his crew shot at them and the Tahitian Boy jumped back into the ship. This happened in October 15th in 1769.
