The Trabi was possibly one of the worst cars ever built! It was the “people’s car” of East Germany before the reunification of Germany in 1990 – designed to be cheap to build and own. It was small, under-powered (a two-stroke engine) and far from reliable.
However, its very awfulness gave the Trabi a large fanbase, especially after reunification. People have learned to love their Trabi, and in Berlin today you can go on a tour round the city centre in a Trabi parade.
As the parade goes by you can see the passengers desperately trying to keep their door closed and not breathe too deeply if the window is open – the fumes that this little monster gives off are truly appalling!
That car does not look safe at all either.
They wouldn’t be allowed on the Berlin streets if the brakes didn’t work!
Interesting car,,,I guess there is some reason for the tourist attraction…I was fond of the Moris Minor, the Mini Minor and the Vaux Wagon
It’s just a tourist attraction. People like to say they’ve been a ride in a Trabi. I didn’t do it myself – it’s probably quite expensive and a long queue!
Interesting. I wonder why one would want to be in a parade if they feel it was the worse car ever built. Perhaps everyone doesn’t feel the same.
