INDIAN RAILWAYS system is gigantic! Trains are the main means of transport in India, a country with over a billion inhabitants. Besides the usual, daily travel of the population in general, India’s traditional culture requires that the millions of people who live far away from their relatives, travel frequently for family events such as birth, death, celebrations, weddings or illness. Every day, an average of more than 8 350 trains cross the almost 80 000 km of railway lines carrying over 12.5 million passengers. Freight trains carry more than 1.3 million tons of goods. Together, these trains every day they travel a distance which is three and a half times greater than the distance between Earth and the Moon!
Wow, those are interesting facts. I always fear for the people who hang on the sides of the trains.
