It might seem odd that Marie could have gone on a month’s vacation and shut off her phone. But Marie had lived much of her life in the ‘pre cell phone’ era. Lived in a time where people went away and no one heard from them beyond a post card, unless there was a catastrophe.
Marie had taken this vacation to get away from her life, from the people in her life, to be herself without reference to others.
She didn’t call Steffie when she landed, nor yesterday, because she wasn’t ready to plunge into the family interplays.
Now, sitting at her desk at work, feeling ‘back’ and in control, Marie rang her daughter.
Steffie ranted for a few moments then began to give her mother the intricate details of what had transpired while she had been away on vacation.
Not surprisingly, Steffie told her mother how Rose had died and was buried.
