Our serial series is set in Kenneth Shumaker’s medieval fantasy realm of Quantos. We find Apprentice Mage Morgus is out from the Mage’s University and on his one-year walk-about before he returns for his journeyman certification test on Autumn 50 of Pine, during the reign of King Regeanus III in the royal city of Mount Oryn’s South State District 13. Our intrepid hero, with a checkered past, is an attractive thirty-three-year-old human Jalnoric male with a bold personality and is determined to survive his walk-about year at any cost, even if it means snuggling in and working with nobility.

We continue now with Morgus episode E008 part 2 ‘Green Rabbit Bottle’ on:

Autumn 87 Unicorn

The wight doesn’t falter as it claws at Hez, striking him slightly, evilly drawing part of Hez’s soul out from him, weakening the priest.

Anxious, Morgus carefully aims for the wight, attempting to avoid Hez, and casts his next ‘fan flame’ in an intense full burst. The creature flares up in more full yellow flames. It drops to the ground as it rages in plumes of brilliant multi-hued flames until there is nothing but grey ashes remaining.

Concerned for the others, Morgus rushes to check with the priest, asking, “How are you from all that? Typically, from what I hear, such a strike from a wight draws the soul out of a person, killing them. Even going so far as to creating another wight.”

Struggling to remain standing, Hez quickly sits on the ground, shaking. “I feel weaker, and I’m forgetting things that I know I should know. But, I think I’ll be okay. I simply need a rest.”

Acknowledging Hez, Morgus turns to the other two. “It’s time this creature receives its Right of Passage. Gather up all of its ashes and carry out the ceremonies. Take the necessary time for the Jal ceremony, and bury it in the ward’s cemetery.”

Still concerned for Hez, Loura nods in acknowledgement, answering, “Right. As you command. Who’s paying for the supplies?”

Grunting, caught off guard, Morgus then answers, “The Baron. How much do you need?”

Gruffly, Hez answers, “Sixty Flairs is proper for the Jalnoric ceremony.”

Walking away, Morgus replies, “See me tonight for the coins.”

Autumn 88 Bear

Life is strange, Morgus and the three priests dealt with one wight last night, but he’s not comfortable, yet. There are at least three more of the dreadful creatures out there.

At the moment, the Jalmal, Master Platter, from Platter Holdings, is arriving at a few minutes after noon with four new cow hides for Morgus.

Entering the waiting room with the light of Imvor on the pangolin’s shell carving, Morgus then inspects the hides. Morgus finds only one of the offered oxen hides is suitable for his mage parchment. He presents payment to Lasiter for the agreed upon contract price of three Flairs.

Winter 1 Bear

Now in a new season with the clear sphere overhead, the extremely high east gods-breath makes it difficult for Gendal to drive the carriage to Leza’s home and back.

Driving to Hessan estate, the enticing Jalfem is slightly green of complexion from the rocking of the carriage caused by the harsh gods-breath.

…..

In the staff common room, as she sits with Morgus, Leza is avoiding any drink or eating.

The fireplace warmly roars with the fresh firewood that Morgus just stoked it, for Leza’s comfort so she can warm up. Sitting in a seat next to her, Morgus turns to Leza, asking, “How is Sesan doing with the master carpenter?”

Swallowing hard to clear her throat, Leza answers him. “My brother is doing well. He is maintaining a good work record … learning new skills … he’s happy.”

Looking softly into Leza’s eyes, Morgus asks, “But are you happy?”
