Another Jamaica Folk Tale

Anancy is a spider.  Many of the tales about him have their roots in Africa.

This is my favourite story.

(It is told in dialect but I’m translating)

Things were very hard, and there was very little food. Anancy went out and got five pears.  That was all he could get.

He gave one to his wife, and one each to his children.

The youngest said;  “What are you eating Daddy?”

Anancy said, “It is alright, you eat.”

“No Daddy,”  said the youngest, take half of my pear!”

“Yes Daddy!”  said the other two children and gave him half of their’s then looked at their mother, who cut her pear and gave Anancy half.

As usual, Anancy got more than everyone.
