The biologist reports to a dangerous, secret expedition, where the rules of nature do not exist. Annihilation was praised as the ‘smart’ sci-fi, fantasy movie, and was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Last night I decided to watch this movie. My expectations were great. I wasn’t completely disappointed with the movie, but it did not fulfill my expectations to the fullest.
The first two thirds of the movie, though partially interesting and mysterious, are very slow. The second third of the movie is definitely more interesting, more tense and with a lot more events. The movie is mentioned in various places as a horror, and although in the latter part there are some very interesting scenes for horror movie lovers, I do not think that this movie is in that category, although moviemakers probably are not sure which genre this movie is because IMDb has changed three times genres. Interestingly, there is no SF genre, and the movie is exactly that.
As for the “smart” movie statement, I didn’t see anything particularly smart about it, only half of it is not explained, and even interestingly, there is very little conversation in the movie. The movie opened up various mysteries, and half of them are not explained or maybe I am not that smart enough. LOL!
The look and effects of the movie are very good. This is a movie full of colors, something like Avatar movie. In addition, there is this pretty good music in the movie but you can not hear it often. All in all, Annihilation is an interesting, mysterious sci-fi, fantasy movie, which is below my expectations. Be sure to watch it. Maybe you will like it.
