Doorway to a Chicago Basement Apartment (Black & White / Orton Version) (2017-02-20 17-58-35b)
The building is located at 6215 N Wayne, Chicago, Illinois (Edgewater).
I used a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera to take the photo. Editing was done with Luminar 3. I converted the image to black and white and did some fine-tuning. Then I added the Accent-AI and Orton filters.

Wonderful finding and interesting mood!
Thanks, Ellie. I’m glad you liked it.
What a stunning picture! ?
I never lived in a basement apartment but I dream of living in the countryside anyway. ?
Thank you. I’m glad you liked it.
That is well suited to black and white treatment. Although I have never lived in a basement apartment I did live for one Chicago area winter in a basement covered with tarpaper because my family was building a house. Even without a roof that basement was far bigger and more comfortable than the train car we lived in before.
Neither option sounds particularly pleasant during a Chicago winter.
They don’t call it the windy city for nothing, do they, Gary?
Never lived in a basement apartment.
This photo reminds me of a scene from a movie.
Great job not he editing.
Thanks, Carol. I wasn’t planning it but, when I finished, I thought it looked a bit film noir.
Yes it is perfect!
Silly typos from before. 🙂
What a great basement apartment door. I lived in a basement apartment, but my door wasn’t anything like that one!
Thanks. This place is about 2 blocks south of my house. I’d been walking by it for over 20 years and hadn’t noticed it much. I knew it was there but I didn’t find it interesting. One day I just happened to walk by it at the right time of day and I grabbed my camera. Anyone who saw me probably thought I was nuts.
Or a cop surveying a house! (or a PI)
I remember living in the basement of a building while in college. One day there was a knock on the door, I had to move out of the apartment for a week while they treated for mold!!!!
I don’t think anyone would take me for a cop.
Mold is nasty stuff. Do you remember the Purple Hotel on Lincoln and Touhy? They goy such a bad case of mold they had to tear the building down.
i do remember that I didn’t know why the building was demobilised.
The photo is nice! I have never lived in basement before, and I am not sure if there is any basement apartments in my country. They are not common here.
Thanks. To be honest, I don’t remember seeing them anywhere except the USA. When I visited Athens there were some basement shops but not apartments. At least, not that I saw.
Yes, I have had to live in a basement, I do not want to do again. Developed bad health problems from the experience.
I almost did when I was in college but opted for a different place. I didn’t care much for the landlord. I never thought about the dampness causing health problems. Even more glad I didn’t take the place now.
I have heard of the saying about people living in their parents basement but as far I know, I never did see a basement apartment in Louisiana.
They would probably be flooded! You need attic apartments in LA. 🙂
I was thinking the exact same thing.
That is one bad side of living in South Louisiana is the flooding from tornadoes and hurricanes.
That is true since most houses after Katrina now are a few feet from the ground floor.
This is different. Basement apartments like this are seldom for relatives. They are usually rented out like any other apartment but, because of it being in the basement, it’s usually a bit cheaper.
