Doorway to a Chicago Basement Apartment (Black & White / Orton Version) (2017-02-20 17-58-35b) – Black & White Friday

Doorway to a Chicago Basement Apartment (Black & White / Orton Version) (2017-02-20 17-58-35b)

The building is located at 6215 N Wayne, Chicago, Illinois (Edgewater).

I used a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera to take the photo. Editing was done with Luminar 3. I converted the image to black and white and did some fine-tuning. Then I added the Accent-AI and Orton filters.

  1. That is well suited to black and white treatment. Although I have never lived in a basement apartment I did live for one Chicago area winter in a basement covered with tarpaper because my family was building a house. Even without a roof that basement was far bigger and more comfortable than the train car we lived in before.

    • Thanks. This place is about 2 blocks south of my house. I’d been walking by it for over 20 years and hadn’t noticed it much. I knew it was there but I didn’t find it interesting. One day I just happened to walk by it at the right time of day and I grabbed my camera. Anyone who saw me probably thought I was nuts.

      • Or a cop surveying a house! (or a PI)

I remember living in the basement of a building while in college. One day there was a knock on the door, I had to move out of the apartment for a week while they treated for mold!!!!

  2. The photo is nice! I have never lived in basement before, and I am not sure if there is any basement apartments in my country. They are not common here.

    • Thanks. To be honest, I don’t remember seeing them anywhere except the USA. When I visited Athens there were some basement shops but not apartments. At least, not that I saw.

    • I almost did when I was in college but opted for a different place. I didn’t care much for the landlord. I never thought about the dampness causing health problems. Even more glad I didn’t take the place now.
