On the Topic of US Geography

Although not the largest in the world, the United States is a big country and it is a diverse one. One thing that can sometimes be confusing to non-Americans is our propensity of referring to the state we live in when we are talking about something in regard to the US. In part, that is because of the diversity of the states in the US.

If someone asks an American where they live, rather than saying, “I live in the US”, they are apt to say, “I live in Utah” or whichever state they live in. That can be a little confusing since there are even a lot of Americans that don’t know very much US geography. A lot of people, given a map of the US, can identify Texas, Alaska, Hawaii, or California. However, it is much less certain that they would be able to point out New Mexico or South Dakota if you asked them to. They are the same way in regard to mountain chains, major rivers, or what-have-you.

It might be rather fun to have a quiz about US geography, so here you go.

    • US geography is difficult for people who live in the US. For someone who doesn’t live here, it would be massively more difficult, even if they spent extensive time studying it. On the other hand, the strength of getting a low score on a quiz like this is that it gives the opportunity to learn a great deal. :))
