What Can I Help You With?

I have been blessed. Most of my life  I have lived where locking the doors to my home has not been necessary. My father had the theory that if someone was going to come in and rob you, you shouldn’t have  to have to replace the door as well. We live in a small community and our doors are only locked when the grandkids are fighting and lock each other out.

This does not mean we are not cautious when a stranger walks into our home. This morning was a great example. At about 4:30 am a man I didn’t know came walking in the door. I said loud enough so everyone could hear me. “What can I help you with?”

Then I said “I’m covered.” That let everyone in the house know that I  had everything I needed to protect myself and the house. Had I not said that they would have moved into action. The stranger asked if he could use the rest room. I directed him to the horse barn where there is a heated bathroom and many dogs. I used the remote to unlock the door and intercom to settle the dogs.

He left after he came out of the horse barn.

Am I worried he will come back? No, not likely and perhaps he just really needed to use a bathroom.

  1. In here, if you leave your door unlock (in an obvious manner) then prepare to have all your valuables gone! We’ve foreigners tricking housewives and elders to open the door and robbed them after knocking them out.

It’s always good to be careful. I won’t trust someone who doesn’t knock at least once or twice before entering.

  2. We always lock our doors at night and when we leave the house for any reason – although I have been known to forget to do this when nipping round to the corner shop!

I don’t like the idea of somebody just walking in when they feel like it. We have a friend who has her own key – she does ironing for us and needs to be able to deliver the goods when convenient to her – but that is as far as we go.
