Tune Up Your Communication Skills

The world would be a much better place if we could all communicate just a little better, and the world is a big place. Perhaps it would be easier if we just started in our own home working on communication skills. Then maybe we could bring those skills here and see if we could encourage more great communication.

Active listening is very important. Often times people don’t hear what you believe you said. Active listening puts a responsibility on the listener to question and restate the information of the speaker to make sure they understand the intent of the statement.

I have an excellent example. Once I had person tell me that they felt abused. My perspective and understanding of abuse is probably more extreme that others. I have lived with someone who had blackouts, would beat me, and have no recollection of the events. There was evidence of black eyes, bruises and broken bones, but no memory of the experience. An apology seemed empty as the abuser didn’t really know or remember the event. So my definition of abuse is very different that one who uses for minor offenses. Neither party is right or wrong. The only way to understand each other is to ask questions and use communication skills.

When someone restates what they heard and asks for clarification, it’s active listening and a useful communication skill to learn and practice.

Skill number one is active listening.
