Tips to stay warm and safe this winter

This winter has been quite cold and with the cold, there are also the most varied tactics to keep warm, but there are small mistakes that we make in an unconscious way that can jeopardize our security.

Here are three tips that will help you stay warm without putting your lives at risk.

Pay attention to heating at home: If you need to heat the house, choose to turn off the electrical appliances that are not needed in order to avoid overloading the electricity system and pay attention to prevent potential fires. If, on the other hand, you use combustion heating systems, such as fireplaces, braziers, stoves or gas heating systems, make sure that there is air renewal – incomplete combustion of fuel creates carbon monoxide that, when not released, it can be lethal. Choose to have a little of the window open, even if it is not the space of the house where you are at that moment.

Warm clothes are your friends: If you are exposed to the cold, use gloves, a hat and scarf to cover your mouth and nose, preventing cold air from entering your lungs, and adapt your shoes to the conditions. Take shelter from the wind and rain so that your body does not cool down and, if you are in a place suitable for snow, avoid walking on it or on ice, in order to prevent possible falls.

Pay special attention to the car: It is important to maintain a reduced speed and pay special attention to the darkest areas of the road, where there is the possibility of ice sheets forming. If you like to turn on the vehicle’s heating, leave a window opening opposite the wind and turn it on for only 10 minutes, hourly, so as not to overheat or be exposed to possibly toxic vapors. It is also important to pay attention to the news and the Civil Protection guidelines so that you are aware of all events.
